Biblical Examples of Drunkenness!

Biblical examples of drunkenness!

And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit. Ephesians 5:18

This passage does not condone social drinking but rather emphasizes being filled with the Spirit. If you think this gives approval to social drinking (just not getting drunk) then how quick are you to seek the filling of the Holy Spirit? Why would you accept the first half of the verse but neglect the second half? The second half is very clear!

Those who are filled with the Spirit, act different they are spiritually enthusiastic. Those filled with the Spirit have boldness for the Lord that they otherwise would not have. (Acts 2:15-17)

Let’s look at some people in the Bible who got drunk:

Noah (Genesis 9:20-24) would experience great shame when he awoke from his drunken stupor. He made himself vulnerable when he got drunk with his wine. One of his sons did something to him that was very disgraceful. Noah would have to sober up before he knew what happened to him.

Noah was a good man and alcohol made him look like a fool!

Lot (Genesis 19:33-38) would escape for his life with his two daughters from Sodom. They got him to drinking because he was probably a social drinker. He became so drunk on two different occasions that his wicked daughters committed incest with him. Can you imagine the shame he felt when he discovered what happened? When he was drunk he had no discernment or restraint to lustful passions. How many drinks did it take to get him drunk? We don’t know, but we know he was willing to take the first drink. It is amazing how one drink can lead to such devastating shame and reproach! Why do Christians look for excuses to drink alcohol?

Nadab and Abihu (Leviticus 10:1-9) went into the tabernacle and burned strange fire. They were priests and had a responsibility to pray for the people and worship God. God sent fire and burned them because of their strange fore in the tabernacle. Why would they offer strange fire in the presence of God? Because they were drunk! Verse 9 says, do not drink wine nor strong drink, thou, nor thy sons with thee, when ye go into the tabernacle of the congregation, lest ye die…

Someone might say, well we can’t drink in the tabernacle but outside church would be fine. If you are a Christian, your body is the temple of God (1 Corinthians 6:19). Why put alcohol in the temple?

Nabal (1 Samuel 25:2-3 and 36-38) got drunk after celebrating the sheering of his sheep. He was a wicked man that had no desire for God nor discernment of God’s will. He died the day after he got drunk. God killed him. Drunkenness and ungodliness are always connected.

The moderate drinking of alcohol leads to the excessive drinking of alcohol. You say, I can handle alcohol! He that standeth take heed lest he fall (1 Corinthians 10:12)! God does not put the drinking of alcohol in a favorable light!
