For Thou Didst Call Me

…The LORD called Samuel: and he answered, Here am I; And he ran unto Eli, and said, for thou calledst me. And he said, I called not; lie down again. And he went and lay down. 1 Samuel 3:4-5

Three times the Lord had called Samuel and three times Samuel ran to Eli and said, “Thou calledst me”. I find it fascinating that Samuel confused the voice of the Lord with Eli’s voice. Samuel had not heard the voice of the Lord before this time, nevertheless t sounded a lot like Eli’s voice to him.

Could I be that the voice of the LORD sounds a lot like the voice of our parents, guardians, and mentors?

The fact is

God puts leadership in our lives to guide and direct us into his will. To ignore them is to ignore God! This does not mean they are God but rather God uses their influence to help us know him better.

I wonder if God sounded like Moses when he spoke to Joshua? I wonder if God sounded like Isaac when he spoke to Jacob?

I remember when the Lord was working on me as a youth pastor to move on. I was not sure as to where the Lord wanted me to go so I talked to my Pastor about it for two reasons; one to let him know what I was doing and two, to get counsel. He asked me if I had thought about starting a church and I said no but I said I would pray about it. A week later I told him I would and looking back I know it was the Lord using his counsel to direct me to Lebanon and start a church. God used his voice to speak to me.

We would be wise to listen to the leadership in our lives and get their counsel because God put them there.

This should not replace our personal study of God’s word.

It is through the word of God we discern good counsel. Anytime someone would counsel you to disobey God’s Word then you should know not to listen to them.
