Get The Kink Out Of The Hose!
But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never the thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. John 4:14
Have you ever used a long garden hose to wash the car? You turned the spicket on and drug the hose over to the vehicle only to discover there is no water coming out. What did you do? You retraced the length of the hose to find the kink and twisted it out. You may have more than one kink in the hose and in order to get the maximum water pressure you had to remove all of the kinks. It may have seemed like a bother but it sure made washing the car easier.
Our Lord told us that his Spirit would spring up into everlasting life after we received Christ as Savior. He uses the metaphor of a newly dug well that bubbles up water. Those who have received Jesus as Savior should have a spiritual life that surfaces. See Galatians 5:22-23
Why is it that many who claim to know Christ do not experience this spiritual life? There are only two answers:
One, they are not really saved.
Two, they have something hindering the work of the Spirit, similar to the kink in the hose situation. Here are some areas where we can hinder the Spirits work;
- We can lie to the Spirit of God– Acts 5:1-3/ James 3:14 *Hypocrisy will put a kink in the hose of your spiritual life! You can fool people but not God. The answer is be honest!
- We can resist the Spirit of God– Acts 6:10 They knew the truth but in Acts 7:51 they resisted the truth. God is calling his people but not on a cell phone! We know when the Lord is speaking to us about a certain issue in our lives. He will never lead you contrary to the Word of God- John 16:13. *stubbornness will put a kink in the hose of your spiritual life! The answer is be humble and submissive!
- We can grieve the Spirit of God– Ephesians 4:30-32 *Harsh words others will put a kink in the hose of your spiritual life! The answer is, repent and seek forgiveness. If you were wounded than be forgiving as Christ is to you!
- We can quench the Spirit of God– 1 Thessalonians 5:19 *A critical attitude will put a kink in the hose of your spiritual life. *it means to put out the fire! We have a lot more to rejoice about than we do to complain about! If someone is excited about God don’t you dare extinguish their excitement! We must be careful to not be spirit quenchers when we walk into the house of God. You may have experienced some rude people before you came to church but it does not justify being rude. The answer is be thankful and rejoice in the Lord! 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
We can only live the Christian life through the strength of God’s Spirit. You don’t have to be perfect to get the Spirit of God to work in and through you. You just need to keep the kinks out of the hose and ask for help! It sure makes washing your life easier when the Spirit of God is at work!
