The Christian and Alcohol

The Christian and alcohol

Wine is a mocker and strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.         Proverbs 20:1

Is it acceptable for a Christian to drink small amounts of alcohol for social purposes? Whether it is beer or wine is not the main question. This question only pertains to those who truly care about their testimony and walk with God. Those who do not care about their testimony only use the Bible when they think it can validate their carnal behavior. So, for those of you who are really interested where to stand on the issue, let me first say, this article is by no means exhaustive. There will be just enough information to challenge you to think about it.

I come from a long line of drinkers or I could say drunkards. I love my family but alcohol has gotten many of them into a lot of trouble. Now I know some people (even people I like) who have not had a problem with alcohol, they seem to be functioning just fine. I do not wish to hurt them or even condemn them I just want to express why I take the total abstinence stand on the issue.

  1. The scriptural reason; the verse in the heading of this article is true and holds weight because God said it and because experience has proved it. People can be easily taken advantage of when they are drinking, some become more irritable, and most develop an exaggerated feeling about themselves.

  1. The practical reason: I’ve tried it and know it can get out of control quickly. I can’t afford to lose my testimony.
  1. I will have a very difficult time helping an addict overcome alcohol if he knows I drink, even if it is in small quantities.
  2. One glass of wine is not the remedy for an addict
  3. It only takes one drink to develop an alcoholic. Most drunkards never planned on being drunkards. One glass of wine may be the door to many more.

  1. The Principle of the high road– It is better to be safe than sorry. There is definitely nothing wrong with abstinence. Living by this principle may make you look like a prude around some but you will never look like a drunkard. I would rather err on the safe side!
