You Don’t Know What You Don’t Know

You don’t know what you don’t know

A lawyer pressed his witness for information in front of the court and finally the witness said, I don’t know but I’ll pretend if you will leave me alone? Often Christians testify as if they are pretending rather than speaking from experience. If we are going to impact family, friends, and society for Christ we better first of all admit what we don’t know and work with what we do know. The blessing is that salvation is an experience that every believer should know. It ought to be real enough to be certain of its effect on you.

You can only really talk about what you know. Your hypocrisy can only go so far until those who know your subject identify your masquerade. I can talk about cars but not for very long. If I am around a mechanic I typically do the listening rather than the talking. I can talk about construction work but if I am around an architect or builder I would rather do the listening, although I may ask a lot of seemingly dumb questions.

But if you want to talk about the Bible and orthodox Christian doctrine, I believe I can carry a persuasive conversation. Yet a Christian can know the letter of the law but not the spirit (Romans 7:6). A Christian can know doctrine but not know God! (John 14:9) The Lord Jesus said to Philip, have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me Philip? It is possible to be around the Lord and not really know him, yet the advantage of knowing him is freedom. (John 8:32) And ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free. Free from error, free from spiritual bondage, free from sinful patterns and habits, free from guilt and shame, free from darkness and despair. If this interests you then you need to know that there is more to know about Jesus! He wants you to know him not just theoretically but experientially but this takes faith in his Word. Philip would learn that Jesus is able to feed when it doesn’t seem possible in John 6:5-6. In John 14 he would learn that Jesus and the Father are one. Oh ho we need to learn more about Jesus, who is, the way the truth and the life (John 14:6).

It takes faith in the trials to know Jesus, the three Hebrews in Daniel 3 not only got to fellowship with Jesus in the fire, Jesus was made manifest to the king. Job would learn more about God from his trial than he did before his trial (Job 42:1-6).

Do those around you know that you know God? Have you been pressed to be a witness?
